MARY BORDEN FAMOUS & INFAMOUS                                                                

Heroine, Celebrity and Author AND Local Resident

February 13th This talk, about a Chicago-born heroine of WW1, sees the welcome return of speaker Gary Shaeffer. His subject, wealthy heiress and socialite, Mary Borden 1886-1968, described as one of the conflict’s ‘forgotten heroines’ was a nurse and activist. She was a prolific writer throughout her life, and a poet recently celebrated for her war sonnets. During the 1920’s, she resided in Great Brington.

 LIFEBOATS OF RNLI; RESCUE OF WW1 HOSPITAL SHIP, SS ROHILLA

April 2nd. Mike Major is a life-long volunteer with RNLI and now Chairman of the Lifeboat Management Group of Whitby lifeboat station. He will reach back over 100 years to tell the desperate story of the 3-day attempt to rescue passengers of WW1 hospital ship, SS Rohilla, off Whitby’s jagged rocks. Reports described the disaster as ‘worse than the Titanic’.
