CREATON WALKING GROUP

Spring arrived early and the countryside exploded with blossom and birdsong. The Creaton Walking Group enjoyed the delights of the area around Pitsford reservoir, encouraged by the coffee shop and ice cream van!

The June walk will explore the Harlestone area with the usual lunch at a local pub.

If you enjoy walking, come and join this friendly group. We meet on the second Saturday of the month at 10am at Creaton lychgate. Well-behaved dogs welcome. We walk for about 8 miles followed by an optional pub lunch. Bring walking boots and water.

Next walks are on:

Saturday 14th June

Saturday 12th July

Over The Counter - at Creaton Village Shop

So it looks like Summer has come to Creaton and in the Village Shop Dave has his legs out and one or two others have shed their jumpers! Perhaps now is the time to stock up on charcoal, burgers, sausages, salad and rosé wine – other colours are available.  And, as the excellent Joseph Morris meat continues to fly off the shelves, did you know that you can order any meal you fancy and it will usually be in the shop by the next day? Looking for something to try? How about lamb shank, or mixed grill meats?

On the baking front, we welcome the return of Pastel de Nata but only for a limited period! Baked fresh every morning, get some whilst they are there.

Always on the lookout for potential volunteers there is a particular gap at the moment that is hard to fill, that of a Sunday. If you are able to offer a few hours regularly on a Sunday morning, you will be welcomed with open arms.  As usual, ask at the shop to find out what a shift entails and hand in your details—please!

Creaton Community Benefit Society, the company behind the shop, will be holding its AGM on Thursday 24th July. Proceedings are held in the Village Hall and start at 7:30pm. The guest speaker this year is Sally Fell who is not only one of our excellent volunteers but she also supplies the shop with delicious ready-meals which she has cooked at home. Sally has had an interesting life in catering; so come and hear her story.

The AGM is open to all members of the Benefit Society. To become a member you pay £20 for one share which will give you life membership and an opportunity to have a hand in the way the shop develops. To join, please ask in the shop or come along to the AGM.

Creaton Singers

We hope you get to listen to the Creaton Singers whilst enjoying a cream tea at Creaton in Bloom? The performance includes some songs new to the Singers and some old favourites.

Once that Creaton in Bloom is behind us the Creaton Singers will be practising for their concert on Sunday 5th October at 2:30pm in the URC. This is in aid of HFT, a charity that supports adults with learning disabilities to have better quality of lives and have similar opportunities as those more fortunate than them. They help both the individuals impacted as well as their families by providing hugely beneficial resources and services they would otherwise go without. Ollie Perrins-May is running a marathon in Athens in aid of this charity and the Creaton Singers are delighted to be supporting Ollie who has lived in Creaton all his life and whose Grandfather is one of the founding members of Creaton Singers. Save the date!

If you think you might be interested in joining the Creaton Singers come along to the URC in Creaton High Street on a Tuesday evening at 7:30pm for a taster session. All abilities very welcome

The topics for our next two meetings are a little different, both having a charity focus, and guests are most welcome:

Meetings are in the United Reform Church starting at 7.30 p.m.  For more information please contact President, Daphne Clark, 01604 505546 or email wicreaton@gmail.com.

HISTORY NOTES

Friends of St Michael History Group

The final talk of the 24/25 season was given by John Perkins. Called ‘What have the Puritans ever done for us?’, it was an interesting look  through the many, many things that have influenced our language, our poetry, and our literature, that arose out of the Puritan period. It was clear at the end of the evening that the Puritan period had left its mark in all areas of life, and not just in whitewashed church walls.

The season started with a new Committee. Over the period there were two successful Cake & Coffee mornings that will help fund the next season’s speakers and allow FOSM to make a donation to the work to be carried out on the War Memorial.

The Cake & Coffee morning in March included a display about land ownership in Creaton. One aspect was who owned what at  the time of Enclosure in 1782. The largest landowner then was Robert Andrew. His family lived in Harlestone but they had owned land in Creaton for many years. His is but one of many examples where Creaton land was owned by many who did not live here. Creaton seems not to have been a place with its own ‘Lord of the Manor’.

The 25/26 season starts in September.

Heritage Group

The work in the Church is now almost complete and looking wonderful. We now look forward to deciding how to display the results of our research. We still need to fill a few gaps, so if anyone has any information or knowledge of the history of Creaton, please do contact us via the website:

Creaton Old Pictures

This little group are enjoying celebrating Queen Elizabeth’s Silver Jubilee in 1977.

After a variety of games in the daytime, including a tug-of-war, tossing the bale, and dressing up, there was a dance in the marquee in the evening.

It is said  that the dance was a bit of a challenge. Due in no small way to the slope of The Green, the easy moves were going down the hill but the ones up hill became increasingly harder. Obviously this was not in any way linked to the occasional celebratory drink taken during the evening.

If you can put names to these faces or can share stories of the Silver Jubilee, do contact Creaton Old Pictures through the Village Link.
